Moxy Hotel Downtown (Seattle, WA)
Artist Liaison + Curator, 2017 - 2018
PROBLEM
Moxy Hotels are known for just that - moxie. As one of Marriott’s newest brands, they are a contemporary franchise that combines the Millennial zeitgeist with immersive design.
For the past several months, a different art consulting firm had been pitching artwork options to Ankrom Moison Architects; they were continually uninspired by the results. The team was getting worried - the opening was only three months away!
Finding themselves in a bind, the architects came to us - they needed artwork, and they needed it fast.
SOLUTION
With no artwork yet chosen for the public spaces, I got started. I had to find artists who fit the Moxy aesthetic and budget plus had the ability to create commissioned artwork on an accelerated schedule.
For inspiration, I looked to the outdoors. I wanted to integrate the hotel’s surrounding - the Pacific Northwest- with themes of camping, the woods, and of course, local folklore. The graffiti artist Mark Samsonovich took the idea of folklore to the next level, creating a series of black and white works on vinyl of Bigfoot in the modern day. Unexpected, fun, and a little whimsical, these artworks greeted guests on each floor, celebrating non-conformity and boldness above all.
